Apartment Credit Check

Question: In october I will be moving and will need to rent an apartment, the problem is I have horrible credit and am not sure if anyone will rent to me. I had $5000 in credit card debt that I recently paid off, so I have all outstanding debts taken care of, but my credit is still bad. I was thinking of getting a secured credit card to help my credit, but on my report it still shows credit cards that went to collection that I did recently pay off, but it does show that I failed to make on time payments and had collection issues. I would like to get an upper scale 1 bedroom for about $800 a month, but if I can’t pass a credit check then who would rent to me? Do I need good credit to rent an aprtment? I understand that there are under the table and private parties that will rent without a credit check but those are few and far between. I know one option is to get a room mate with good credit, but I want to live alone. Any advice on this matter would be very helpful.

Answer: I doubt any landlord would turn down a year’s rent in advance in cash.

If you can’t swing that, then you’re likely to have some touble. But keep trying; eventually you’ll find someone who’s too lazy or naive to run a credit check, and then you’re in like flint.
