Cell Phones, love them or hate them?

Question: No, Ken, it is VERY frugal for me, since I use my cell phone less than ten minutes per month, why on earth would I want to pay $18.90 per month for time and features I don’t want and would not use. I get ALL the cell phone minutes I need for $5.00 per month. If I should happen to use them all on one long call (could happen) I can recharge the card for $30.00 and be back on track.

Bob, I hate to give you the bad news, but *prepaid cellular* is usually used by high-risk users who have little or no credit. So they pay “as they go.”

What, snobbery? Next thing you know you’ll be dumping (HA!) on dumpster diving because the homeless do it!

It might be a good idea, beforepronouncing what or is not frugal, to consider that others might not have the same criteria that you do.

That’s obvious — if you are willing to spend 50 cents a minute with your PREPAID cell phone!

There are some GOOD deals on the market now. I have a friend in NC who pays $16.95 a month from Bell South and has UNLIMITED INCOMING CALLS 24 hours a day, seven days a week! The deals are there — you have to look for them.

Yeah, but if you only actually need to use the phone for 10 minutes a month incoming AND outgoing, it’s a waste of money to pay more for a larger quantity of stuff you’ll never use.

And now a Question: Do all Nokia cigarette-lighter adapters work properly with all Nokia phones providing the connecter fits?

Answer: I assemble cellular telephones and batteries for Motorola, and, although I do not know Nokia’s specific specs, it *should* work. You can always stop by your cellular supply store and ask a quick question, to be sure. As for the gentleman who felt that “pay as you go” phones are generally for those who have no/bad credit….so? Just because people may be having a “bad patch”, does that mean they don’t have the right to the peace of mind that a cell phone provides? I ran into a very “bad patch” 5 years ago, and had bad credit. When I got my job with Motorola, it meant I had an hour plus commute, and I had to leave at 3:30 am. I purchased one of the “pay as you go” phones (Motorola naturally =)) and it is still more than adequate for my purposes. As a comparison, he stated his usage averages 1500 minutes per month, while I have made two calls on mine in the past 3 months, totaling 11 minutes. Now, I could easily afford a different calling plan, but, why? This works for me, the same as his works for him. Incidentally, if anyone is interested, there are only two companies currently who manufacture the electronics for cellular telephones, Motorola, and Ericson. So which phone has the best quality really is a moot point. I’d go with the one who’s outside appears to have been assembled the best, and offers the most suitable calling plan.
