Will I be able to get an apt?

Question: I recently got laid off and it’s likely that I may need to relocate in order to find another job.

The layoff came as a complete surprise to me and I have a bunch of maxed out credit cards.

I have never been late on rent at any of the apartments I lived before and I expect to have a higher income for my new job.

If I need to relocate, will I be able to get an apartment in the new area? Or would they deny me an apartment because of my maxed out credit cards?

Thanks for any help.

Answer: They want to know that you will pay your rent, not damage the apartment, and not cause them any trouble.

Having maxed out credit cards is no problem so long as you have a history of making the payments on time.

And that you have paid your bills and rent on time, and never been evicted.

Their worst nightmare is someone who does not pay their rent on time or not at all, someone who has wild loud parties and ticks off the other residents, someone selling drugs, or someone who trashes the apartment. It can cost thousands of dollars to fix a wrecked apartment.

So some apartments will look at criminal records, credit history, driving record, and apartment rental history.

If you have drunk driving, drug convictions, a history of not paying bills, etc. Then they would not want you. If you had speeding tickets or other minor things, they could care less.

If you are worried, get a letter from your current landlord saying that you are a good tenant and always pay your rent on time. (With their phone number on it.)

Also some people own one house which they rent out. These people will not have the means to check your background as larger apartments and rental management agencies do.
