frugal year

Question: I dont want to work this year. I want to have my mid-life crisis and roam around the west and Alaska, hiking and writing. I dont mind doing some odd jobs along the way, but have no experience in getting odd jobs. I have a van I can live out of for months quite happily, but all my money is tried up in my house. My house will be for sale, but for several reasons it probably wont sell quickly. If/Once it sells I’ll be home free, in more ways than one. I can get a couple thousand perhaps selling another vehicle, to give me some money to start, but I will have to keep paying mortgage and such so that wont last long- maybe a month or two. How can I do it? Loans are out of the question.

Answer: Sounds like your house sale is holding up your dreams. What possible scenario is going to make it more saleable while you are cruising around the west? I’d get the house sold before I started doing things which are going to put me upside-down with other debts.

If you really want to do it and from your remarks about “home free” sounds like you have equity in the house, get a home equity loan.

Only caveat is don’t try to fool yourself with how much of a good thing you have in that house.
